| Earth |
The 3rd planet from the sun, and the only one in the solar
system supporting life as we know it. Earth is one of the four
alchemical elements. In esoteric
tradition such as Kabbalah, Earth represents the manifestation of matter. Earth has the properties
cold and dry, and is associated with physical sensation. |
| Ectoplasm |
A foul-smelling, milky-white substance
considered to be an energy form that only functions properly in darkness. A
medium often began a routine with 'ectoplasm' exuding as an
umbilical cord from his/her mouth, although this 'phenomena' is very rare these days. |
| Elder Futhark |
The Elder Futhark is the oldest of the
runic alphabets, and
consists of three sets of eight letters. The primary characteristic distinguishing runic alphabets from others is that each letter, or rune, has
a specific meaning. Although runecasting is classed as 'divination', a runecaster does not see, or even attempt to see into the future.
Instead, he/she examines the cause and effect and points out a probable outcome. Odin, the Norse God, supposedly hung upside down for
nine days in order to gain 'the wisdom of the runes'. |

| Elements |
Basically, the four qualities of the world. In
Alchemy, the four elements are
Air, Earth (see above), Fire and Water. |
| Elementals |
Creatures or spirits that inhabit and take on the qualities of
the four elements. Sylphs are the spirits of Air, gnomes, the spirits of Earth, salamanders, the spirits of Fire, and undines, the spirits of
water. Elementals are also thought forms which can be manifested by worked up emotion for personal use to enhance a ritual or
spell. These thought forms are taken from your subconscious and have aspects
of you, although they are detached from you. See also

| Enochian Magick |
This is magick used for the evocation and commanding of
various spirits. It is a system of Ceremonial Magick based on the writings of Dr John Dee and Edward Kelley (also spelt as
Kelly) in the 16th century. According to Dee and Kelley their information was delivered to them directly by an angel (the Great Angel Ave),
after which they created the Enochian script. They claim it embraces secrets contained within the
Book of Enoch (a title given to several attributed to Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. Enochian script is often referred to as the
'Angelic Script', and is used in Ceremonial Magick when working with angelic beings, particularly so in the
Calls or Keys used to summon them. |
| Equinox |
The word 'equinox' is derived from the Latin words aequus
(equal) and nox (night). An equinox occurs when the celestial equator and the path the
sun appears to take through the constellations of the Zodiac (the ecliptic) meet. This occurs just twice a year, in spring and autumn, when
night and day are of equal length (the vernal and autumnal equinoxes). These names are normally used when one wishes to relate the equinox to a season.
However, the seasons of the northern and southern hemispheres are opposites (the spring equinox of one hemisphere is the autumn equinox of the other). Every
26,000 years, our planet earth completes what is known as a
'precession cycle'. During each precession cycle, the earth's 'axis', for want of a more definitive word, 'wobbles' in relation to the celestial
equator, changing the constellation that appears on the ecliptic on the vernal equinox. This is referred to as the Equinox of the Gods. |

| Esbat |
Wiccan and Neopagan Esbats are based on the lunar calendar,
occurring thirteen times each year on the full moon, and usually mark meeting times for
covens and ritual groups. Sabbats, of which there are eight, are based on the solar calendar. |
| Esoteric |
Hidden or deeper knowledge or teachings that are possessed
or understood by a few as opposed to the masses. In religion this manifests in the 'mystical'. |
| ESP |
Extra Sensory Perception, or ESP, is a collective term
describing communication or perception by means of other than our five physical senses of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell, i.e. a
sixth sense. Joseph Banks Rhine (1895-1980), Professor of Psychology at Duke
University in the USA, conducted thousands of experiments producing statistical evidence of the existence of a
telepathic function in some individuals, and coined the term ESP (also referred to as
psi after the 'agent' through which the mind is able to receive the ESP impressions). |

| Evocation |
Unlike what happens with
invocation, involving a ‘calling in’,
evocation involves a ‘calling forth’, most commonly into what is called the Triangle of Art. Aleister Crowley explains the distinct
difference between invocation and evocation as such: "To 'invoke' is to ‘call in’, just as to ‘evoke’ is to ‘call forth’. This is the essential
difference between the two branches of magick. In invocation, the
macrocosm floods the consciousness. In evocation, the magician,
having become the macrocosm, creates a microcosm. You invoke a God into the
Circle. You evoke a Spirit into the
Triangle of Art." |
| EVP |
Electronic Voice Phenomena or EVP is the term applied
to the supposed communication by spirits via a tape recorder or other electronic device.
Sceptics feel there is a more natural explanation for such phenomena, e.g. interference from radio transmissions and the like, whereas, based
on the recordings they have made, those involved in investigating the
paranormal are convinced that it really is the departed making contact. |
| Exorcism |
A religious-based act of forcing a demon or evil spirit from the body of a possessed person, usually performed by a religious person such as a priest, and involves performing certain
rituals. |
