What is Astrology?

Astrology has been defined in various ways, one such example being 'the study of the synchronistic interaction of the psyche and its reflection in the physical world' amongst many others.  Basically it is the belief that the arrangement of the constellations, stars and planets at the time of a person's birth sets a predetermined pattern in that person's life.  So how did we ‘select’ these constellations, stars and planets?  Click on the image to the right to see the order of the planets in our solar system.

Stars appear to move across the sky on a regular schedule, much like the sun.  At various times of the year, different constellations (groups of stars) become visible at sunset.  The rising constellations rotate based on the Earth's path through space, so consequently can be used to mark the seasons in regions when moderate weather may not convey any change.

Most of the constellations of which we are aware today bear Greek and Roman names, but the sky was mapped long before these empires were established.  The Greeks adopted their system from the Babylonians, whose origins in turn may have stemmed from Sumerian traditions 3,000 years earlier.  Even further back, scientists suspect that markings on the cave walls at Lascaux in southern France – created over 17,000 years ago – may chart the Pleiades and Hyades star clusters, making it the first known star map.

In 1929, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) officially defined 88 constellations across the span of the sky.  The official constellations are in fact ‘rectangular slices’ of the heavens holding the stars within them.  Individual groupings are included, for instance, the constellation of Ursa Major contains all of the stars around the shape known by the same name.  However, many of the groupings most people consider to be constellations are not officially recognised as such, e.g. the ‘Big Dipper’, which lies inside Ursa Major, is an asterism, a group of stars not officially designated but known by most non-astronomers.

The sun, the moon, and the planets travel on a set path through the sky known as the ecliptic as the Earth rotates.  Of the 88 defined constellations, 13 of these that pass through on an annual basis are known as the signs of the Zodiac, the names of which are:

Aries
Aries, the Ram, is a mid-size constellation, ranking 39th in size among the 88 modern-day constellations.  While it is a fair size at 441 square degrees, it is not very luminous and has only three stars that could be called ‘bright.’  Aires does not represent the ram to every culture.  The Chinese see the constellation as twin inspectors, and it is a porpoise in the Marshall Islands.  Aries is an ancient constellation but it was not officially recognised by the International Astronomical Union until 1922 and its boundaries were not defined until 1930 when they were outlined by astronomer Eugène Delporte.

Locating Aries

Aries is located in the Northern Hemisphere between Pisces to its west and Taurus to its east.

Taurus
Taurus, the Bull, is hard to miss as he charges through the northern winter sky as it is one of the most prominent and visible of all of the constellations.  The Bull is also one of the oldest documented constellations, with details of the constellation going as far back as the Early Bronze Age.

Locating Taurus

The Bull passes through the sky from November to March, but is at its most visible in January.  It covers 797 square degrees.

Gemini
Gemini is Latin for ‘twins,’ and it is one of the few constellations that actually looks like its namesake.  Gemini is one of the Zodiac constellations and one of the 48 constellations described by the 2nd century astronomer Ptolemy.

Locating Gemini

Gemini is fairly easy to spot in the sky, even for amateur star gazers.  It is located northeast of Orion, and between Taurus and Cancer on the elliptic.

Cancer
Cancer, which is Latin for crab, is the dimmest of the 13 constellations of the Zodiac, having only two stars above the fourth magnitude.

Locating Cancer

Cancer lies between Leo, the lion, and Gemini, the twins.  It is almost impossible to see Cancer as a crab with the naked eye or even binoculars.  It looks more like a faint, upside-down Y.

Leo
Leo, the Lion, is one of the earliest recognised constellations.  The Mesopotamians are known to have documented the ‘lion’ constellation.  The Persians called it Ser or Shir; the Turks, Artan; the Syrians, Aryo; the Jewish, Arye; the Indians, Simha.  These are all translated as ‘lion.’

Locating Leo

Leo is a highly recognisable constellation, as it is one of the few constellations that resemble its namesake.  It is fairly easy to find because the “pointer stars” of the Big Dipper point to Leo.

Virgo
Virgo, the Virgin, is a congested constellation with 26 known exo-planets – planets outside of the solar system – orbiting around 20 stars, and at least a dozen Messier objects.  It is the largest constellation of the Zodiac and the second-largest constellation overall, behind Hydra.

Locating Virgo

Virgo covers 1,294 square degrees.  Most of the constellation’s stars are dim, but Virgo's bright blue-white star, Spica, is fairly easy to locate.  Stargazers can use the Big Dipper as a guide.  Follow the curve of the handle down to the southeast until you come to the bright star Arcturus, in the Bootes constellation.  Continue the arc to the next bright star, which is Spica.  There's even a mnemonic phrase to help you remember: ‘Follow the arc to Arcturus, then speed on to Spica.’

Libra
Libra is Latin for 'weighing scales', making it the only constellation of the Zodiac representing an inanimate object.  At 538 square degrees, Libra ranks 29th overall in terms of size.  It doesn’t have any first magnitude stars, making it relatively faint but not impossible to view with the naked eye.

Locating Libra

Libra is in the Southern Hemisphere, located between Scorpius to the east and Virgo to the west.  In addition to Scorpius and Virgo, Libra borders Serpens Caput, Hydra, Centaurus, Lupus and Ophiuchus.

Scorpio
The Scorpius constellation has intrigued people for centuries, not only for its distinctive shape, but also because it is one of the brightest constellations in the sky.  The name is Latin for scorpion, or literally translated as the creature with the burning sting.  However, Scorpius is not a scorpion to everyone.  The Javanese people of Indonesia call this constellation Banyakangrem, meaning ‘the brooded swan’ or Kalapa Doyong, meaning ‘leaning coconut tree.’   In Hawaii, it is known as the demigod Maui's Fishhook.  In Chinese mythology, the constellation was part of the Azure Dragon.

Locating Scorpius

In the Northern Hemisphere, Scorpius lies close to the southern horizon; in the Southern Hemisphere, it lies high in the sky near the center of the Milky Way.

Ophiuchus
Ophiuchus is a fairly large and rambling constellation, but it is one of the least well-known.  Although Ophiuchus does touch the elliptic – the path that the sun appears to take through the sky – astrologers for centuries ignored it as part of the Zodiac.  The constellation finally got some respect in 2011 when Ophiuchus was added as an astrological sign and realigned the Zodiac calendar.

Locating Ophiuchus

Ophiuchus [Oaf-ih-YOU-kus] spans 948 square degrees in area.  It can be found northwest of the center of the Milky Way.  It is situated near the constellations Aquila, Serpens and Hercules and opposite Orion.  The southern part lies between Scorpius to the west and Sagittarius to the east.

Sagittarius
Occupying 867 square degrees and containing the most stars with known planets (16), Sagittarius is the largest constellation in the Southern Hemisphere and the 15th largest constellation overall.  The constellation has many bright stars and is very visible with the naked eye.  As is the case with all of the Zodiac constellations, Sagittarius was recorded in the 2nd century by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy, and it is Latin for archer.

Locating Sagittarius

Sagittarius is at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, and the galaxy is at its densest point as it makes its way through Sagittarius.  In addition to Capricornus and Scorpius, the constellation borders Aquila, Scutum, Serpens Cauda, Ophiuchus, Corona Australis, Telescopium, Indus and Microscopium.

Capricorn
Located in the Southern Hemisphere, Capricornus represents a creature that is a blend of fish and goat and the name means ‘goat horn’ in Latin.  While it is one of the Zodiac constellations identified by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy in the 2nd century, Capricornus is often used when referring to the constellation while Capricorn is used in conjunction with the sign of the zodiac.

Locating Capricornus

Capricornus is among the faintest constellations, just above Cancer.  The 40th largest constellation, Capricornus measures 414 square degrees and contains two stars with known planets.  It sits among the other constellations of the water genre, including the water-bearer Aquarius, the whale-like sea monster Cetus, the fishes Pisces and Eridanus, the river.

Aquarius
Aquarius is a constellation in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest documented constellations of the Zodiac.  There are no particularly bright stars in the constellation and it can be difficult to view with the naked eye.  However, it is large – spread out over 980 square degrees and the 10th largest constellation in the sky.  As is the case with all of the Zodiac constellations, Aquarius was recorded in the second century by the Greek astronomer Ptolemy.  Its name means ‘cup bearer’ or ‘water bearer’ in Latin.

Locating Aquarius

The constellation can be seen in the spring in the Southern Hemisphere and the fall in the Northern Hemisphere.  Aquarius is located near Cetus (the whale), Pisces (the fish), Delphinus (the dolphin), Eridanus (the river), which are all part of what is often referred to as the water or sea section of the sky where there are a cluster of water-related constellations.

Pisces
Pisces, named for the Latin plural of fish, occupies 889 square degrees, making it the 14th largest constellation overall.  While it is a fairly large constellation, its stars are faint – none are brighter than fourth magnitude – making it challenging to see in the sky with the naked eye.

Locating Pisces

Pisces is in the first quadrant of the Northern Hemisphere and covers a large V-shaped region.  Its large area, coupled with its dim stars, makes it hard to pick out in the night sky.  Northern Hemisphere observers are able to see Pisces most clearly in early autumn.

The constellations appear to form shapes across the sky, but the stars themselves don't make up patterns in space.  The distance from our world to the individual stars in a constellation varies, often by tens of light-years, scattering the stars randomly across the galaxy.  The pictures we see at night are formed because we only see two dimensions on the night sky, missing the depth that is also present.

Still, the constellations can provide entertainment and a source of imagination.  They can help the lost to find their way.  They aid sky watchers in their search for planets, comets, or other events, by a process called star hopping.  And, as they surely did with the ancients, they can provoke a sense of timeless wonder.

Signs of the Zodiac

Astrologers use 12 of these constellations as signs of the Zodiac, omitting Ophiuchus, to make predictions (horoscopes).  Unlike astronomy, astrology is not a science.  Signs differ from constellations, bearing only a loose reference to one another.  The sign of Pisces, for instance, corresponds to the rise of the constellation of Aquarius.  Ironically, if you are born under a particular sign, that constellation it is named for is not visible at night.  Instead, the sun is passing through it around that time of year, making it a daytime constellation that can't be seen.

The word 'horoscope' comes from the Greek meaning 'scope of the hour'.  A horoscope is a 'map' of the mathematical relationships of the planets to the earth, and to each other, at the date and time of our birth.  It simply reflects our own individuality and identity - it does not cause it - and determines to foretell what will happen in the future, i.e. whether conditions will be favourable to conduct a business activity, move house (including emigrating), get married, start a family etc.  Horoscopes now appear in almost every national and local newspaper, as well as on the internet, and are consulted by millions of people throughout the world on a daily basis.

The word 'zodiac' comes from the Greek 'zoe' (animal, or life) and 'diskos' (wheel).  There are twelve constellations/signs of the zodiac, one for each month of the year.  These signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces.  A thirteenth constellation (Ophiuchus, which lies between Scorpio and Sagittarius) was added to these twelve in 2011 but is not used when creating a horoscope.  Each of these signs attributed to the zodiac has a colour, a precious stone, a planet and an element (fire, water, earth or air) assigned to it as one of its attributes.

The planets reflect the archetypal references (which exist as ideas) that are inherent in the 'Multiverse' (many layered universe) holographically.  These archetypes were refined in delineation by the renowned psychologist, Carl Jung.  These 'ideas' are supposedly reflected in all that we see around us because we are 'one with the universe' and, as such, are that reality.  A poem relating to the zodiac can be read from my Poetry page.

Astrological Birthsigns

This section has been designed to provide an insight into a general interpretation of the meaning of your astrological birthsign, along with the natural traits associated with it.  Each sign has four sub-headings, characteristics, likes/dislikes, health and career.  Just click on the highlghted link relative to your sign to go straight to it.

Aries

  • Characteristics

Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and hails the spring equinox, March 21.  Thus it also hails the beginning of the new zodiacal year and, as such, it means new beginnings.  As the first sign in the zodiac, Arians want to start new projects and 'lead the way'.  The sign for Aries is the Ram, and in spring young rams are adventurous and impulsive, full of boundless energy, just like those born under its sign.  Arians love a challenge.  They are pioneering and love freedom, and as such are courageous leaders, who care for all those subordinate to them, but unswerving in their objectives.  Because they like to lead, they do not make very good followers, being unwilling to obey orders or directions for which they can see no purpose or reason.  They are egoistic, and usually very concerned with gratifying their own needs.

In personal relationships Arians are usually frank and very direct, and tend to be generous friends.  Arians are reputed to have a high sex drive and thus make passionate lovers.  However, this sex drive can have a negative side and drive them to promiscuity, and even 'trick' them into a marriage which could possibly end with disastrous results.  But if the marriage is successful with offspring, Arians make devoted parents, defending their children with their own lives if necessary.

      • Failure
      • Time wasting/hanging around
  • Health

Aries is said to govern the head and thus the brain.  Consequently Arians are prone to migraines or headaches in general, sunstroke, and depression.  Because of their tremendous physical commitment they are liable to physical injury, possibly through accidents.  Indigestion and nervous disorders should also be of some concern.

  • Career

Arians, with their boundless energy, make good athletes, climbers and explorers, probably in outer space in this modern age.  Because of their leadership qualities they would make excellent servicemen, i.e. soldiers, sailors, airmen etc.

Taurus

  • Characteristics

The Taurean's main characteristics are strength of will, extreme determination and practicality.  They are generally dependable, steadfast, prudent, fair, firm and unshaken when faced with adversities.  They are stable, enthusiastic, confident, well-balanced law-abiding people and lovers of peace, with a strong sense of material values.  Being more practical than intellectual the majority of the time, they tend to become fixed on a theme or subject due to their preference for relying on accepted or known and proven patterns of experience.  They have a love for the 'good things in life', luxury, pleasure, comfort, good food and the best of wines.  Consequently, they may have to resist the temptation to over indulgence and drunkenness.

In relationships they make true and generous friends, but rarely with those outside their own social status.  They are amorous, but not excessively so, and tend to be sexually straightforward, not given to experimentation in the bedroom.  They are faithful, home loving spouses and make thoughtful, kind parents.  Should anyone offend them they readily become a true enemy, although they soon forgive if their offender makes an apology and meets them halfway.

      • Staying indoors
      • Man-made, unnatural items
      • Being rushed into decisions or actions
  • Health

Taurus is said to govern the neck and throat.  Consequently Taureans need to beware of throat infections, goitre and debilitating respiratory conditions such as asthma.  They are also at risk of rheumatism, as well as diseases of the genitals, womb, liver and kidneys.  Since their bodies are reputed to be prone to physical laziness, Taureans are also prone to weight problems.

  • Career

Taureans can succeed in almost any profession they choose.  They are not afraid of getting their 'hands dirty', being industrious and good craftsmen.  They obey superiors, and as such are reliable, as well as methodical and practical workers.  They prefer positions of responsibility, but in a routine where there are no deadlines to meet.  Banking, insurance, education, medicine, chemistry, industry, architecture, farming and surveying are professions in which Taureans could make good managers.

Gemini

  • Characteristics

Gemini is the dual-aspected sign of the Twins, and as such is very complex as well as contradictory.  On the one hand it produces attributes such as versatility, but on the other two-facedness, inconsistency and slyness.  Geminians are normally very intelligent and analytical from childhood.  They love mental challenges, easily grasping virtually everything requiring mental aptitude, but they dislike the labour involved in the learning process.  Their concentration does not tend to last, and they will readily 'change horses' midstream, moving from one project to another.  When faced with adversities, they have no desire to worry about a problem or to search for a solution.  Instead, they will pick someone else's brain.  Geminians can be courteous, kind, generous, and thoughtful, but despite these excellent attributes, because of their 'alter-ego', they will use their personalities to achieve their own ends.  If this involves having to tell lies, or using cunning, sly or evasive means, they will have no qualms about it, and will unscrupulously put the blame on somebody else.

They can be entertaining companions, witty acquaintances rather than true friends, but never dull.  With their love of talking they are great conversationalists, but they can also be quarrelsome, boasters, cheats and liars.  Because of the dual aspect of their emotional nature, Geminians are fickle in relationships.  They can be very emotional but at the same time dislike any sign of sentimentality.  Because Geminians take nothing seriously, in love they are flirtatious, any emotion they show being for the 'moment' while the relationship is new.  They enjoy the thrill of the chase, but tend lo lose interest once the prey has been caught.

      • Feeling restricted/tied down
  • Health

Gemini is purported to rule the upper body, including the hands, arms and shoulders, as well as the lungs and nervous system.  Because of this, Geminians should be aware of diseases which affect the upper part of the body, for example, bronchitis.  As they are also known risk-takers, they could be prone to taking unnecessary chances resulting in accidental self-harm, or injury to others.

  • Career

Their general characteristics suggest that Geminians can succeed in many walks of life.  Their love of talking and reading makes them skilful at speaking and writing, so they could become debaters, diplomats, preachers, teachers, lawyers, authors, poets or journalists.  Any type of work where they can use their quick wit in different surroundings would be ideal.  This encompasses serving in the armed forces, dealing with the public or as a sales representative.  Being logical, rational and analytical they would also make good scientists or possibly IT specialists.  Conversely, their 'other side' suggests they could become confidence tricksters or thieves, at which they would probably excel.

Cancer

  • Characteristics

Of all the characteristics associated with the signs of the zodiac, those relating to the Cancerian are the least clear-cut, ranging from the timid, dull, shy, cautious and shrewd to the most brilliant extrovert.  Negatively, Cancerians can be over-emotional, unable to 'let go', moody and/or touchy.  Just like a crab (or the majority of them), permanently attached to its shell, Cancerians are home loving people, the male needing a secure base to which he can retire, the female pursuing her overwhelming maternal instincts.  Cancerians are very imaginative, sometimes over-imaginative, and thus prone to fantasy.  They have excellent memories, in particular for those events which had some strong emotional effect on them, and are able to recall the exact details years later.  Outwardly, Cancerians give the impression of being tough, sometimes physically, always mentally, but this toughness is only an outer barrier, a 'shell'.  Just like the crab they have a soft inside, sympathetic and extremely vulnerable to their emotions and uncompromising sentimentality.

  • Cancerians make very loyal friends and are doggedly patriotic.  In personal relationships they are a mixture of toughness and softness, often emotional and romantic, but, nevertheless, remaining extremely loyal to their partners and family.  They are greatly influenced by the ones they love, giving much and asking for little in return.

Cancer governs the chest, breasts, elbows, stomach and digestion, womb and female reproductive organs.  Cancerians are said to be prone to breast cancer (though this is certainly not a proven fact) and to suffer from varicose veins, pleurisy and piles.  They may also have a weak digestive system, and suffer from gastritis, ulcers and other such stomach ailments.  There is also a tendency for coughs and weak vision.

  • Career

Their own love of comfort and home life suits the Cancerian for a career as an excellent chef or housekeeper.  They can serve in departments of public affairs, from catering to welfare and nursing.  Because they enjoy reading and writing, they can also make good journalists or writers.  More common occupations are estate agent or gardener.

Leo

  • Characteristics

Leo is the most extrovert, dominant and creative of all of the zodiacal characters.  Leonians can be generous, warmhearted, creative, faithful and loving.  Conversely they can be pompous, bossy, interfering and intolerant of others.  Being courageous, positive, self-confident and independent, just like their sign, the lion, the king of the beasts, they lust for power and need to dominate in all walks of life.  They are truly born leaders, highly intelligent, and well equipped to bring out the best from their subordinates who trust them implicitly.  However, a negative Leonian can be a very 'nasty piece of work', displaying arrogance and an excessive quick temper.  When suspicious of any rivals, they will use cunning, lies or any method of trickery to discredit them.

In relationships Leonians are sincere, trusting, warm hearted and plain spoken, but dislike being let down by those they trust.  They have a particularly strong sex drive, so much so that they find it difficult to be true when attracted to the opposite sex.  They may have many love affairs, moving swiftly from one attractive partner to another, as a result of which they may not be very successful at marriage.

  • Likes/dislikes

      • Mundane day to day chores or existence
      • Not taking chances
      • Penny pinching, meanness
  • Health

Leo is said to govern the forearms, including the wrists and hands, the upper back, spine and heart, so pains in the back, spinal complaints in general, heart disease and blood disorders can be expected, besides rheumatism or arthritis in the hands and wrists.

  • Career

Leonians need to lead - they were born for it.  They are excellent organisers, and love to start new projects, laying the groundwork for subordinates to follow.  If they come from a 'working class' background, they will aspire to becoming the foreman, and subsequently the boss or manager.  In business they may well become the chairman of a successful company; in politics they will not rest until they aspire to a top position in government.

Virgo

  • Characteristics

Virgoans are intelligent, analytical, practical and meticulous.  Conversely they can be overcritical, too much of a perfectionist, fussy and worry excessively.  They have an enquiring mind, and are methodical, logical and studious, using their mental aptitude to produce clear analyses of problems.  Sometimes they may be too meticulous and over-analytical, and may slow company or personal objectives down as a result.  Outwardly they appear cold, and are conscious of any shortcomings within their make-up.  This outward lack of emotion may actually conceal too much emotion, which they are loath to show because of their lack of trust in others.  Virgo is the only zodiacal sign represented by a female, and their modesty reflects this in that they become like an 'old maid', and criticism turns to nagging.

They have very few stable relationships, and thus make few friends.  In marriage they look for a partner with a low sex-drive, as they are not renowned for being over-passionate.  This does not mean that they do not make good husbands and wives, it is simply the fact that the physical act of love-making is more of a duty than a desire.

Virgo is said to govern the hands, central nervous system, abdomen, spleen and intestines.  Illnesses include chest complaints, including catarrh, coughs and colds and pneumonia (rarer these days).  Because they tend to worry, sometimes unnecessarily, turning molehills into mountains, this makes them exceptionally vulnerable to stomach problems such as ulcers, and may even lead to hypochondria.  Male Virgoans could have trouble with their sexual organs.

  • Career

Due to their lack of self-confidence, Virgoans make better subordinates than leaders, although they make excellent technicians with their inventive talents.  They like using language - correctly, so might suit a job in a library.  Alternatively, they might become writers, particularly of historical reference books as opposed to novels.  Their practical, analytical minds might mean they become computer programmers, accountants or book-keepers, or even chemists or physicists.

Libra

  • Characteristics

Librans are very sociable types usually sensitive to the needs of others.  They despise cruelty or viciousness of any kind, and will 'go out of their way' to keep the peace around themselves.  Despite this, however, they do not tolerate anyone who challenges their opinions, when they believe they are right.  They are basically kind, gentle, moderate, well-balanced types, but they are curious and can tend to search for 'gossip' in their circle of friends.  Libra is the only inanimate sign of the zodiac.

In their personal relationships they will endeavour to resolve any differences by compromise rather than spoil a friendship.  They like the opposite sex, sometimes to the extent of promiscuity.  Their marriages stand a good chance of success because the kindness shown toward their partner, even tolerating their failings, quickly repairs any hurt felt by him or her if they have had an argument.  Negatively, Librans can be flirtatious and shallow, indecisive, and boring.  Love for the good things in life can lead them to squander money or to become gamblers.

Libra is said to govern the lower back, kidneys and lumbar region generally. Consequently, Librans should be aware of possible weakness in the back, and definitely avoid over-indulgence in alcohol as this can damage the kidneys.  Librans are also prone to suffer from gravel and stones in the kidneys and bladder.

  • Career

Librans have an aversion to any dirty type of work, such as refuse collection and gardening.  Their characteristics intimate that they would make excellent diplomats (being well-balanced and seeing other people's points of view), civil servants, administrators or lawyers.  Similarly, being trustworthy types, they could follow a successful career in banking or finance.

Scorpio

  • Characteristics

Scorpio characters are powerful, passionate, forceful, intuitive and magnetic.  Conversely they can be resentful, obsessive, secretive, obstinate and jealous.  If they appear to be calm and collected, don't be fooled - they are ready to burst into action at any moment, always watching every situation closely.  They have tremendous self-discipline, but this is needed since they can be extremely sensitive, and moved by emotions.  Providing they stay on the 'straight and narrow', Scorpios can become geniuses, but should they stray from it they would make terrible ruthless terrorists, as they would develop a tendency to depravity, collecting vices such as aggression, sadistic behaviour, arrogance, jealousy, resentment and brutality like one would collect stamps or coins.

Scorpios make very good friends, providing their companions do not try to hold them responsible for some action or other.  On the negative side, they are very jealous, and part of their negativity is a tendency to discard friends once they cease to be of any use to them.  Scorpio, being the symbol of sex, means Scorpios are passionate lovers.  They tend to use sex to 'transcend', to cross the boundary of this physical earth into the spiritual.  As a result of this, debauchery is always a possibility.

Scorpio is said to govern the reproductive and urinary systems, as well as the pelvic area.  Consequently, Scorpios are likely to be prone to genital ailments, as well as those of the liver and kidneys, such as stones and gravel, and ulcers and ruptures.  As a consequence of possible problems with the kidneys and liver they may suffer from boils, abscesses and piles.

  • Career

Scorpios can achieve success in many employments, naturally relating as leaders to fellow workers due to their demands and unforgiving nature.   Any profession in which analysis, research, investigation and the solving of mysteries is particularly relevant, so police or detective work, espionage, the law, or physics may be appropriate.  Self-control and detachment indicate that they may become good surgeons.

Sagittarius

  • Characteristics

Sagittarians are good-natured, intellectual, optimistic and love freedom.  Conversely, they can be careless, irresponsible, tactless and restless.  They love to travel and explore, are ambitious and optimistic, suffering disappointment with little or no effect.  They are forthright and honest with a strong desire to see justice done at all times, and may be religious.  They are strong willed, and good at organising things.  Being intuitive, they love to start new projects, but they are better at adapting things as opposed to inventing them.  On the negative side, Sagittarians can suddenly 'blow their top' over trifling matters.  They are impatient and demanding of others.

In personal relationships they are usually reliable and trustworthy.  They can also be outspoken and quickly lose patience, saying exactly what's on their mind, which may well hurt others.  In love relationships, they are 'straightforward' and conventional.  If they have a successful marriage, they will be faithful to their partners, but there is always that restlessness to wander 'nagging' at them.  If the urge to wander becomes excessive, they may waste their lives away on one frivolous pursuit after another.

Sagittarius governs the hips and thighs, so there may be a tendency to suffer from ailments in these areas.  They are also prone to sciatica and rheumatism.  Research shows that ancient astrologers mentioned falling from horses and injuries which can be sustained from them and other four-legged animals.

  • Career

A Sagittarian's characteristics fit him or her for many professions.  The law or politics would suit them, as would any position in public service.  Their love of travel makes them ideal travelling salesmen members of the armed forces, or even explorers.  Alternatively their intellect indicates they may become teachers.

Capricorn

  • Characteristics

Those born under this sign are generally ambitious, practical, patient, disciplined and prudent.  On the other hand they can be pessimistic and tight-fisted.  Being strong willed, they are very capable of persistence to ensure they meet the stringent targets they have set themselves.  But they are liable to mood swings, hence the adjective 'capricious' associated with this sign, and can be reserved and conservative, even pessimistic when things don't go according to plan.  They can also shock people who know them by some witty expression from out of the cyan.  They consider all options and possibilities before taking a course of action.

In personal relationships they often feel ill at ease, being self-centred, and wary about unknown quantities in another person.  They tend to treat casual acquaintances with respect, but when they do eventually make friends they are loyal.  They dislike or distrust the opposite sex, and when entering a relationship of this kind they ensure conditions and circumstances meet their requirements before considering marriage.  If and when they do marry, it is normally for life.

Capricorn governs the bones, skin and the knees, thus those born under this sign may be prone to fractures, sprains or other problems with the lower limbs.  Deafness, rheumatism and rickets are also possibilities, as are skin diseases such as rashes and boils.  Digestive upsets may be caused by a tendency to worry.

  • Career

Men or women born under this sign are dependable workers with their 'see it through to the end' attitude, planning carefully to fulfil their own ambitions, and with their organisational skills can work on several projects at the same time.  They respect authority, but if they come into such a position, they expect their subordinates to meet their own high standards.  Suitable occupations include those associated with money and calculations such as banking, financiers, economists etc.  Anything involving long term planning is also ideal, and because of their love of debate, a career as a politician might suit them.

Aquarius

  • Characteristics

There are two types of Aquarian, the shy, sensitive type, and the lively exhibitionist, but both types share the same characteristics in different ways.  Aquarians are generally friendly people.  They are loyal, honest, inventive and intellectual.  On the other hand they can be detached, contrary, unpredictable and unemotional.  They are also strong willed, and always seek honesty, willing to change their views if new evidence proves them to be wrong.  They are unbiased when hearing both sides of an argument.  They are intelligent, logical and intuitive.  Even though Aquarians dislike loneliness, they often withdraw into themselves, only for this temporary withdrawal to be followed later by a sudden outburst of anger.

Despite their open, friendly personalities, Aquarians find it difficult to establish friendships, as a result of which others see them as being 'cold' and stand-offish.  However, once the ice is completely broken, they do make excellent friends.  The same applies to relationships with the opposite sex, for having found a suitable partner they will be faithful and willing to sacrifice everything for him or her.  Emotionally they are often disappointed because their own ideals cause them to expect more.

Aquarius is said to govern blood circulation, and the whole of the lower legs, so Aquarians are prone to problems in the knees and ankles, including cramps.  They may also suffer from nervous complaints, and anything related to blood disorders.

  • Career

Aquarians are at one with nature, so a career in natural history would suit them ideally.  With their caring attitude a career in medicine or healing is also appropriate, possibly as a veterinary surgeon.  With their thirst for knowledge, a career in the sciences could also figure strongly, as could one in the technological world.

Pisces

  • Characteristics

Pisceans are sensitive types, imaginative and intuitive, compassionate and sympathetic.  Conversely, they can be secretive, weak willed and easily led by others.  They often withdraw into a dream world, and wait for a problem to sort itself out rather than trying to solve it themselves.  However, they 'pick things up' quickly, see and listen well to others, and are open to any new ideas.  Their dislike of being confined gives them a love of nature, and a longing to travel to distant places.  They also tend to be gifted artistically, and are very creative.

They quite happily accept the people around them, and give far more than they get in return in any relationships.  They are not noted for extremes in sexual relationships, preferring a spiritual relationship rather than a sexual one.  Nevertheless, when married they are home loving and loyal partners, remaining ever faithful.

Pisces governs the lymph glands, liver and feet, so consequently Pisceans can suffer from anaemia, boils, ulcers and other skin diseases.  They could also be prone to gout and lameness.  The female of the species, can expect to have heavy periods.

  • Career

Pisceans are 'followers' so work better in subordinate positions rather than any where they have to take responsibility.  Consequently, charity work would suit them, as would a caring position for people or animals.  Their dreams of travel may equip them for duties in the armed forces or the merchant navy.  Their spiritual characteristics could well fit them for a position in the church or possibly in the psychic world as mediums.
